Stud History
The Makeham Family began breeding Border Leicester Sheep in 1957 when Jeffery Makeham purchased 4 ewes from Yarrison Stud and a New Zealand bred ram from Harakeke Stud. The Stud was registered under the prefix of Taringa Downs. Additional stud ewes were purchased from Terreppee and a stud ram” Crymelon Roman” was purchased from Crymelon .Taringa Downs maintained a successful Show and Sale record until a near complete dispersal due to drought conditions.
Some of the top breeding ewes were retained by the Makeham Family and the stud was re-registered in 2006 under the prefix of North-South (No.4773). At the time of re-registration supplementary ewes from Retallack and Chandivan studs were added and the stud was operated by Michael Makeham at Walcha in Northern NSW and Simon & Jeff Makeham in Southern NSW.
In 2010 Michael Makeham established another stud known as “Abberly Park”and as a consequence North-South remained with Simon & Jeff. At the same time North-South became known as “Darbalara” recognising the name of the Gundagai property owned by the Makehams.
In 2014 the Makehams purchased another property “Rothesay”which is located in the Young/Wallendbeen district of NSW. Subsequently the Stud was moved to this new property and at the same time the Stud was renamed North-South Border Leicester Stud.
In 2018 the family decided that the burden of running separate studs was unnecessary and as such North South now one stud located at both Walcha and Young in NSW.
North-South continues to record good sales of both stud and flock rams to local and interstate buyers. The Stud continues a keen interest in showing locally and at Major Sheep shows enjoying their share of ribbons while promoting a quality true-to-type modern Border Leicester sheep.
